Configuring Putty using SSH for Windows

Connecting to the Internet

Before you can setup and use putty, you must be connected to the Internet. For instructions on connecting to UCI, either pickup a handout or locate a computer that already has Internet access and go to the Web page http://www.nacs.uci.edu/communication/modems/

What is Putty and SSH?

  • SSH (which stands for ‘secure shell’) is a recently designed, high-security protocol. It uses strong cryptography to protect your connection against eavesdropping, hijacking and other attacks.
  • Putty is client software that allows you safely log on to our OIT server using the SSH network protocol.

Getting Started

  1. Download putty by clicking on one of the download mirrors below. Save it to your desktop. Execute it by double clicking on its icon.

  1. Under Host Name type in the server you wish to connect to. Make sure SSH is selected, then press Open. (Figure 1)

Optional Configuration File

  1. OIT has provided an optional automatic configuration file.  By clicking on the link below, this file will install the proper security and configuration settings for putty to the windows registry. When asked to what to do with your file, instead of saving it, click Open or Run to execute the program. It will ask if it can add the file to the registry. Click Yes to continue.

Putty Tips

  • Putty is provided and maintained primarily by Simon Tatham. If you need more information or would like to obtain documentation on Putty please visit http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/
  • Instead of closing the putty window to exit, logout of your session completely and Putty will automatically close.
  • If you have poor eyesight or find the font to be too small, holding the left ALT button and pressing Enter will take you full screen large font mode. Holding the left Alt button and pressing Enter will bring you back to normal mode.
